Class is a standard relating to tolerance, construction, dimension, and wall thickness, but it is not a direct measurement of maximum working pressure.
This fitting meets standards ASTM A, ASME SA, and ANSI B for quality assurance/5(2). Figure 3 illustrates the microstructure of a forged L stainless steel. It was forged at °F and allowed to air cool. The only visible structure is the boundaries between the austenite grains.
Figure 4 is the microstructure of another austenitic stainless steel. It is essentially a single-phase material with a few carbides visible. This specification covers ferritic/austenitic (duplex) stainless steel forgings for boilers, pressure vessels, and associated equipment in grades that are also found in Specification A/AM.
The purchaser may specify in the order or contract any appropriate supplementary requirements that are provided in Specification A/AM. For example, for L grade stainless steel plate, ASME II Part D provides two rows of stress properties to identify SA L stainless steel in low and high strength.
